The Annual Cricket Match against the Bridge Club

Mon, 19 June 2000

(Report by Peter Keevash)

The Bridge Club won this year's cricket match. The breakdown was:

Stop press! Bridge club in cricket victory shocker!

In a development that can only be good for the game of cricket, the bridge club have overthrown the dominance of the winkers in their annual battle. Those few of us present were party to a fine game with a nail-biting finish that saw the winkers finally bowled out for one fewer run than the target that they were set by the bridge players.

For those interested there follows a more detailed report.

CUTwC vs CUBC
Jesus Green
Monday 12th June
20 Overs each side
Nature of pitch: variable bounce off the long grass giving much assistance to the bowlers
Weather: sweltering (vindicating my decision to postpone the start until 4pm)
Umpire: Ben
CUTwC captain: Slu
CUBC captain: The collective

CUTwC won the toss and elected to field.

Other points of interest

  1. Simon hit a 6. Timmy played a shot that was declared to be worth 6, but later transpired, after a ranting epic, to be worth a mere 5. The winkers are to be commended for this futile act of cheating which still left them short by a run.
  2. Extraordinary inability to catch a cricket ball, particularly among winkers (Simon the exception honoris causa.) Catching practice will henceforth follow spelling practice on a regular basis.
  3. Treacherous and Copt-like behaviour from Pete.
  4. Ensuing session in the Zebra in which the intrepid winkers bravely faced the Yogi might of the bridge nargs and were not found wanting in either skill or temperament.

Good cricket all round.
